The Ultimate Guide to Lighting for Physique Photos

You can look like a Greek God in one photo and 'soft' in another, 5 seconds later. The difference? Lighting. Consistency is king for tracking.

Consistency is King

If you are tracking progress, variables are your enemy. You cannot compare a photo taken in natural morning light to one taken in a bathroom with yellow overhead bulbs. To track true progress, you need a 'Standard Operating Procedure' for your check-ins.

The Ideal Setup

1. Small, single light source

Overhead lighting is usually best because it creates shadows under the pecs and abs, highlighting definition. Avoid diffuse, flat light (like a cloudy day outside) which washes out definition.

2. Consistent Time of Day

Always take your photos first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom and before eating/drinking. This removes the variable of bloating and food volume.

3. Background

A plain wall is best. Clutter distracts the eye and can actually mess with AI body analysis tools.
